Official statement by RIM regarding carrier NFC blocking
Carrier known to block some features in our Blackberry, luckily here in Indonesia we can use full features of Blackberry but for NFC we have to wait for it since the first NFC device right now is Blackberry bold 9900 which is not launch yet here.
In US, some provider even block GPS because they have also paid service for it, like Verizon Wireless (it’s unblock now), another one is AT&T, that’s why before I ever posted bb maps launcher for this (I never check about this now, so please tell me if AT&T unblock this now), also in AT&T Torch 9810 have no Sim Tool Kit, we have to load other carrier theme to let it comes out. So, RIM just made official statement regarding carrier NFC blocking.
“RIM believes that NFC is an exciting technology that will enable many new capabilities, and we are aligning with our partners in supporting the overall NFC ecosystem by investing in NFC in our products. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 series are the first to be NFC ready, and we are working closely with carrier partners on their roll out plans for NFC.”
Near Field Communication (NFC) allows you sending your credit card data in your NFC phone which enables you to make make a payment like a credit card by touching a payment terminal at checkout or a vending machine when a PIN is entered. But it’s not just for that, with NFC you’ll be able to share contact, songs, photos, etc to other NFC phone with simply by tap/touching the other phone, now this one shouldn’t be block. I hope RIM can force carriers to allow this features.
