Researh in Motion (RIM) announced that Australian Government’s Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) has approved Blackberry Playbook for Government use as long as the tablet is connected to an approve Blackberry Smartphone using the Blackberry Bridge Application.

Blackberry Playbook become the first tablet to be certified by the DSD. DSD also evaluating Apple iOS for private wireless networks that handle national security material, and has issued a ‘hardening guide’.

“At this time, DSD does not recommend iOS for use at the PROTECTED/RESTRICTED level. This guide is intended for use at UNCLASSIFIED and UNCLASSIFIED IN-CONFIDENCE,” it said in the iOS Hardening guide.

“Agencies choosing to use iOS devices for RESTRICTED/PROTECTED information must obtain a dispensation in accordance with the Australian Government Information Security Manual.”

The DSD also said that it has no plans to look into Android.

RIM pointed to the PlayBook’s support for ECC (Elliptical Curve Cryptography) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), as well as its ability to protect enterprise data when it is transferred between the tablet and a BlackBerry smartphone, as reasons why it achieved certification.

“RIM continues to set the benchmark for government security, and now, with DSD approval, the BlackBerry PlayBook is the first tablet to be certified for deployment in Australian government departments. This again demonstrates our leadership in the government sector, and our commitment and investment in secure mobile technology,” RIM’s manager Security Certifications, Asia Pacific, BlackBerry Security said in a statement.

So this is good news, after US, Russia, and now Australia. I mentioned before when Playbook become first US Government Certified Tablet, when it goes for business and security, until now, nothing can beat our beloved Blackberry.
